vienna secession/art deco/dada

I chose three existing book titles and made a new cover for each of them based on styles that I learned from Graphic Design History.

feed in vienna secession

Feed had a futuristic concept and I dared myself to pair it with a style that do not normally fit with it. An artist that I’m very familiar with this style is Gustav Klimt but I wasn’t too confident in recreating his style on this book. Then I found out about Egon Schiele and his paintings. The way he paints his models was my key inspiration to my own. The best example of that is the sullen eyes and high cheekbones of the character on the cover.

Akata witch in art deco

Akata Witch was a really fun book to design as I’m already familiar with Art Deco. I wanted the cover to look like one of those New York posters with a model as the focal point. The drop shadows also help achieve that illusion of depth, as if the illustration is three-dimensional. The back cover is kept simple with a frame to maintain that magical aesthetic.

The Night circus in dada

This book cover was probably the one I had the hardest time with. Dada in general is pretty chaotic and it’s difficult to achieve that while making it look good. So my solution was to be playful with my layout and book title. I even made a ticket and paper ripped edges in Photoshop to have that “physical” aspect to it.
